Lithium Air Battery With a 500-Mile Range

IBM thinks it’s on a breakthrough lithium-air battery’s that can theoretically store 1,000 times more energy than today’s lithium ion battery. The energy density could effectively increase electric vehicle’s range from 100 miles to 500 miles. This research on lithium air batteries has been on going since 2009 when IBM first started the  Battery 500 project. Scientists predict they will have a working prototype by 2013 and a commercial battery by 2020. Just imagine the different possibility laptops working for 40 plus hours without needing a recharge or your Nissan leaf that gets 500 miles on a single charge.

IBM Watson Gets a Job….Oncologist

IBM partnership with Memorial Sloan Kettering to develop tools to help improve decision making for diagnosis and therapy in cancer. What Watson can do is read and understand huge volumes of information. There is so much information being developed in health care in general, with Watson having the ability to understand all this information out there and the rapid increase in cpu power, Watson is making it even smarter and able to make very strong recommendations based on patients’ backgrounds. In 2011, as a test of its abilities, Watson competed on Jeopardy, received the first prize of $1 million beating the long standing champion Ken Jennings. Watson is an artificial intelligence computer system capable of answering questions posed in natural language, deveolped by IBM. Many of the day functions of Watson will be to assist doctors, in there diagnosis.

IBM Unveils a New Brain Simulator

Scientist at IBM in San Jose, California research center announced at the supercomputing conference that they have created the largest brain simulation to date on a supercomputer, made up of neurons, and synapses. IMB claims that it exceeds that of a cat’s brain. Previous simulations have only reach the level of a small mouse or rat brain.  The new breakthrough will led to a better understanding of the architecture and the higher brain function’s in human minds. It will lead to a better understanding of how the brain’s architecture leads to cognition, and it should inspire the design of electronics that mimic the mind. To recreate 1 billion neurons connected by 10 trillion individual synapses. C2 runs on a BlueGene/P supercomputer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, in Livermore, Calif. The program is being funded by (DARPA), which is spending at least $40 million. Launched late last year and will continue until 2015 with a goal of a prototype chip simulating 10 billion neurons connected via 1 trillion synapses.
