The iPhone 5 may be Apple’s next mobile masterpiece, but as with any things aren’t always perfect when a new product is introduced into the wild. Several reports from users have pointed to a variety of problems with the iPhone 5, although most of these should be resolved over time. It’s the early adopters that take the brunt of launch week issues.

How ‘in-cell’ technology could make the next iPhone ultra-thin

We’re all familiar with Apple’s love affair for thin devices. Although the third-generation iPad surprised many by gaining about half a millimeter of thickness, it looks like Apple could be back to trimming product dimensions by using a new kind of display technology in the next iPhone.

Instead of using a display comprising a number of separate layers, Apple could use in-cell touch display technology. The report says Apple would be sourcing its in-cell displays from Toshiba and Sharp.

“The advantage of in-cell is that you’re streamlining the manufacturing process, so in time you should be able to drive efficiencies and reduce cost,” IHS analyst Rhoda Alexander told Wired. “Additionally, by reducing the number of layers, you reduce the size and thickness of the device, making it thinner and lighter.”

Amazon Adds In-App Purchasing to Appstore

Amazon, following the lead of Apple and Google, on Tuesday announced that it will begin letting users make purchases within the apps offered via its Appstore.

The new in-app purchasing service allows developers to charge for digital content, such as upgrades, expansion packs, in-game currency, and magazine issues. With the new service, users of the Kindle Fire and other Android devices will be able to purchase in-app content with just one click.

A number of developers and publishers have already begun taking advantage of the capability, including Walt Disney Co., Gameloft, Conde Nast, Dow Jones.

earlier this month; Amazon has been testing the service since November.

“Amazon Appstore’s In-App Purchasing service enables developers to generate more revenue from their apps,” Aaron Rubenson, director of the Amazon Appstore, said in a statement. “Many of Amazon Appstore’s customers have shopped with Amazon before and they trust Amazon’s easy payment process, which leads to higher conversion of developers’ in-app content and subscriptions.”

This is important because Amazon currently has about 34,000 apps in its Appstore, while Google Play has 450,000 and the Apple App Store has at least 500,000. It’s also a win for Amazon because the online retailer keeps a 30 percent cut of every in-app purchase.

Microsoft to struggle vs. Apple, Google in tablets

The research firm said it expected Microsoft’s market share to rise gradually, helped by enterprise purchases, but to reach just 11.8 percent in 2016 as it lacks consumer appeal.

“Many vendors will wait for Windows 8 to be ready and will try to enter the market with a dual-platform approach, hoping that the Microsoft brand could help them in both the business and consumer markets,” Milanesi said.

In addition to traditional PC makers, Nokia, the world’s largest cellphone maker by volume, is set to unveil its first tablet using Windows 8 software later this year.
