Galaxy NGC 1512 “starburst” series#6

A barred spiral galaxy located some 30 million light years away toward the constellation Horologium, Galaxy NGC 1512is bright enough to be seen with amateur telescopes. The galaxy is some 70,000 light years across, which is nearly as large as our own Milky Way galaxy. The core of the galaxy is remarkable for its “circumnuclear” starburst ring, which is an amazing circle of young star clusters that spans some 2400 light years across. Galaxy “starbursts” are episodes of vigorous formation of new stars and are found in various galaxy environments.

DARPA’s Humanoid Hits the Gym

If you fear the robot apocalypse, perhaps your day would be much improved if you just moved on. Boston Dynamics’ PETMAN robot, developed for DARPA, is getting more humanoid-like by the day it seems, and here we see it—legs, torso, arms, and all—negotiating staircases, running on a treadmill, and even hitting the floor for some pushups. All this strength training appears to be doing PETMAN some good.

PowerPot “kickstarter series#2”

Simply put,the PowerPottransforms the heat from cooking into electricity with no moving parts.  This is done using a technology called thermoelectric power generation. Thermoelectric technology was discovered in the early 1800’s, but found no consumer application in power generation due to the relatively high power needs of the devices in use at the time. However, times have changed. Today, nearly everyone uses microelectronics-based devices (smart phones, mp3 players, GPS units, etc.) which consume less than 5 watts of power.

NGC123 “Grand spiral galaxy” series#4

Also known as NGC123 this fascinating galaxy is dominated by millions of bright stars and dark dust, caught up in a gravitational swirl of spiral arms rotating about the center. Open clusters containing bright blue stars can be seen sprinkled along these spiral arms, while dark lanes of dense interstellar dust can be seen sprinkled between them. Less visible, but detectable, are billions of dim normal stars and vast tracts of interstellar gas, together wielding such high mass that they dominate the dynamics of the inner galaxy. Invisible are even greater amounts of matter in a form we don’t yet know - pervasive dark matter needed to explain the motions of the visible in the outer galaxy.

M51a “The Whirlpool Galaxy” series#3

Also known as Messier 51a, M51a, or NGC 5194, is an interacting grand design spiral galaxy located at a distance of approximately 23 million light-years in the constellation Canes Venatici. It is one of the most famous spiral galaxies in the sky. The galaxy and its companion (NGC 5195) are easily observed by amateur astronomers, and the two galaxies may even be seen with binoculars. The whirlpool galaxy is also a popular target for professional astronomers, who study it to further understanding of galaxy structure (particularly structure associated with the spiral arms) and galaxy interactions.

Are home galaxy “Milky Way” Series#2

An image of the Milky Way’s Galactic Center in the night sky above Paranal Observatory

The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy 100,000–120,000 light yearsin diameter containing 200–400 billion stars. The Galaxy is estimated to contain at least as many planets, 10 billion of which could be located in the habitable zone of their parent star.Depending on its structure the entire Galaxy has a rotational rate of once every 15 to 50 million years.

It’s very difficult to define the age of the Milky Way Galaxy, but the age of the oldest star in the Galaxy yet discovered is estimated to be about 13.2 billion years.

The Universe is believed to be around 13.73 billion years old.
