Meet Iceberg, the world’s only all-white killer whale

A team of Russian scientists say they will embark on a quest next week to observe the only all-white, adult killer whale ever spotted — a majestic and elusive bull they have named Iceberg.

The researchers from the universities of Moscow and St. Petersburg first spotted the orca’s towering, six-foot (two-meter) dorsal fin break the surface near the Commander Islands in the North Pacific in August 2010.

Living in a pod with 12 family members, Iceberg was deemed to be at least 16 years old, given the size of his dorsal fin, said Erich Hoyt

“This is the first time we have ever seen an all-white, mature male orca,” Hoyt told AFP. “It is a breathtakingly beautiful animal.”

The scientists decided to hold back on releasing photographs of Iceberg until they were able to study him further, “but we have been looking for him ever since,” said Hoyt.

Orcas can travel thousands of miles (kilometers).

The scientists would like to establish whether Iceberg is albino a genetic condition that leaves animals unable to produce melanin, a dark pigment of skin, hair and the eye’s retina and iris. Many albino animals never grow into adulthood. Their visibility is a disadvantage in the hunt for food and protection against predators.

Breaking News! North Korea launches rocket, and failed

Early this morning, North Korea attempted to put a satellite into orbit—or, at least, that’s what the DPRK claims, though hardly anybody actually believes that the aim was solely to launch a weather satellite. The rocket carrying the satellite failed to move into its second phase and exploded into dozens of pieces, which fell into the Yellow Sea in between the Korean peninsula and mainland China.

Woolly Mammoth found in Syberia

Russian and South Korean scientists have signed a deal on joint research intended to recreate a woolly mammoth, an animal which last walked the earth some 10,000 years ago. Stem cell scientists are now setting their sights on the extinct woolly mammoth, after there remains were discovered. The South Korean foundation said it would transfer technology to the Russian university, which has already been involved in joint research with Japanese scientists to bring a mammoth back to life.”This will be a really tough job, but we believe it is possible because our institute is good at cloning animals,” Hwang In-Sung said.

South Korean experts have previously cloned animals including a cow, a cat, dogs, a pig and a wolf.

Most poweful weapon ever used? Tsar Bomba!

Tsar bomba is a russian nick name given to a hydrogen bomb, the most powerful nuclear bomb ever detonated. The bomb is sometimes referred to as “Kuz’kina Mat’” potentially referring to nikita khruschev’s promise which he often said “Kuz’kina Mat’”!!! Which is a famous famous Russian idiom. “Kuz’kina Mat’” translates into “We’ll show you!” Nikita khruschev’s was a Russian president during the 1960 UN General Assembly. The remaining bomb casings are located at the Russian Atomic Weapon Museum, in which the bomb was made from. It was decided that such a test blast would create too great a risk of nuclear fallout and a near certainty that the release plane would be unable to reach safety before detonation. This bomb was designed to destroy an entire large city even if dropped five to ten kilometers from its centre.

The bomb was so powerful  Tsar Bomba’s fireball, 5miles in diameter, was prevented from touching the ground by the shock wave. The hydrogen bomb nearly reached 6.5 miles in altitude, of the deploying bomber.

Methane gas in Siberia

More than 50 billion tons of methane could be unleashed from Siberian lakes alone, more than 10 times the amount of methane in the atmosphere now. Russian scientist shuffle across the frozen lakes braking into the ice and measuring the methane out put. Methane gas locked inside Siberia’s frozen soil and under its lakes is currently being released at a dangerous rate. Scientists believe it can pose threat to the world’s climate. However the lack of data over a long period of time casts uncertainty over the extent of the threat. More than 50 billion tons of methane could be unleashed from Siberian lakes alone.
